Serum Hyaluronic Acid Levels in A Horse
After Oral and Intravenous Administration

By Scott W Pierce DVM

A study was performed to evaluate the changes in serum levels of Hyaluronic acid following oral and intravenous administration in the horse. The horses were handled in a routine manner and were not on any other medications during the study.

Materials And Methods

Ten horses were chosen for the study. They were divided into three groups. Baseline blood samples were taken on each horse at the beginning of the study. One group received 100mg Hyaluronic acid daily in an oral gel preparation, the second a single intravenous dose of 40mg of Hyaluronic acid, and the third group was non-treated and served as controls. Daily blood samples were drawn from each horse for seven days. Serum samples were submitted to the laboratory where the Quantitative Hyaluronic Test Kit by Corgenix was used.

The oral HA group had the highest level of serum Hyaluronic acid. The oral group was the only group to have a substantial increase in serum HA by day seven (18% over baseline). The oral group rose from 82ng/ml to 97ng/ml. The intravenous group had a slight elevation by day 4, 78ng/ml to 80ng/ml then by day 7 the HA level decreased to below the baseline value. The control group had a constant level of 40 to 50ng/ml.

The use of oral Hyaluronic acid had a serum enhancing effect on circulating Hyaluronic acid. Circulating HA has been shown to be 10 to 100ng/ml 1 with a half-life of two days or less. 2 Therefore, daily supplementation with Hyaluronic acid is necessary to increase the serum levels of HA.

"I just wanted to write you and tell you what an amazing product you have. I have been using the Vita Bran Joint Care Supplement for a couple years now. I have a 31 year old Running Quarter gelding. I've had him for almost 23 years now. Before I got him he was jumped on a daily basis. He's 15 hands & was being jumped over 5 ft jumps everyday. As he got into his later 20's I retired him. I noticed him in a lot of discomfort. He wouldn't go any faster than a trot even when the other horses ran in the pasture. After a week or so of giving him your supplement, he now will run around with his tail in the air. He's back to his "I'm the coolest" personality. I have taken him off of it in the summer before and he went right back to just trotting. I keep him on it year round now. He's happy, so I'm happy. My mom & I both have 28 year olds that we still ride. We give them the Vita Bran also. They are doing so great that there's no way we're going to stop giving it to them. Thanks again!"
